On June 19, three departments, namely, Department of Equipment Manufacturing Industries I of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Bureau of Quality Development of State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), and Fire Supervision Department of National Fire and Rescue Administration, jointly held a video meeting to enhance safety management of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and arrange related work for the year.

The meeting pointed out that China’s NEV industry has achieved remarkable results, which did not come easily and should be highly cherished. All relevant parties should thoroughly study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches and instructions, ensure both development and security, maintain a clear-headed approach, and make every effort to prevent and mitigate safety risks associated with NEVs. The aim is to enhance the safety of NEVs and sustain a sound momentum of industrial development.

The meeting requested that automakers and traction battery manufacturers proactively shoulder the primary responsibility for product quality and safety, with a focus on preventing risks associated with product design validation, production and manufacturing, and after-sales services. They should strictly fulfill the obligation to inform, guide consumers in proper vehicle usage, and refrain from exaggerated or false advertising, resolutely safeguarding the bottom line of safety. It is also essential to take a long-term perspective and avoid “involution-style” competition. Cutting corners, using inferior materials, or pursuing short-term “cost reduction and efficiency gains” at the expense of product performance or quality should be strictly prohibited.

Moving forward, the three departments will strengthen collaboration to advance information sharing and organize safety risk inspection and deficiency investigation initiatives. They will ramp up efforts in supervising and inspecting the production consistency and urge enterprises to enhance the effectiveness of their safety monitoring platforms. Additionally, rigorous investigations into corporate violations will be carried out to firmly uphold a robust industrial development order, thereby promoting high-quality development of China’s intelligent connected NEV industry.

Representatives from local departments of industry and information technology, market regulation, and fire and rescue; the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Equipment Industry Development Center (EIDC); the SAMR Defective Product Recall Technical Center; as well as relevant NEV and traction battery manufacturers, industry associations, and inspection and testing institutions attended the meeting.
